1. Pin hem 1/8" longer than finished hem
2. Using a small stitch length, sew very close the the fold
3. Trim extra fabric very close to stitching--it helps to have a fairly small pair of sharp scissors.
4. Roll cut edge inside and stitch again
All done! A perfect tiny hem that works great on Chiffon and other sheer or lightweight fabrics.
Wish I had read this last summer! I needed to hem a bridesmaid dress for one of my daughters. I am definately not a seamstress! It was passible but wow, I love how your hem looks!
ReplyDeleteThat was so helpful...thank you
ReplyDeleteFinally an easier way to sew a hem on a chiffon dress. Thank you for sharing.

I've always been scared of slippery fabrics and since I'm not an accomplished sewer I just have to tell you what a saviour you are! I live in a remote town of 400 people and the nearest professional seamstress is at least 400 km away so when a friend received her mail-order bridesmaid's dress last week and couldn't find anyone to hem it, I said "I'm no expert but I'll give it my best". I was completely stumped but you gave me the confidence to try it by machine rather than hemming it by hand (that was plan A). I'm half-finished right now and the wedding is at 2 pm tomorrow so I'd better get back to it. It's looking great!
ReplyDeleteThanks again.
oh my gosh.....YOU'RE MY HERO!!!:D goodbye bias tape!!!
ReplyDeleteplease excuse my as i go to my sewing machine and hem my skirts...:D
Thank you very much for this helpful information. I do alterations as a hobby and I was asked to hem a bridesmaid dress for a wedding in April. It has three layers-the lining, the satin and the chiffon. This is GREAT information as I have never sewn chiffon. Thank you so much!!
ReplyDeleteThank-you for your help! I need to hem a Wedding dress & couldn't figure out how to make it look good. The machine "rolled hem foot" wasn't working well either. Now I feel more confident.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your wedding dress!
DeleteThank you from me as well. I would have totally botched up the hem on a silk chiffon scarf if not for your simple, well illustrated, and written directions.
ReplyDeleteAbout to attempt the hem on a bridesmaid's dress. Any suggestion on needle type and size and/or using the feed dogs?
ReplyDeleteFor chiffon fabrics I usually use a size 10 needle and the feed dog. Good luck with your project!
DeleteI'm more than happy to discover this great site. I wanted to thank you for ones time for this particularly wonderful read!! I definitely appreciated every part of it and I have you book-marked to check out new things on your site.

Thank you so much for this great tutorial! I just finishing hemming my future daugher-in-law's wedding dress using your method - and it worked beautifully! So glad I found this blog - I have you bookmarked now!
ReplyDeleteWould you use a rolled hem foot? My machine came with one and I love the slippery fabrics, but also fear messing them up. They are not cheap!
ReplyDeleteYou can use a rolled hem foot, but I prefer this method using the regular presser foot.
DeleteThank you sooo much!! Finally sewn a small hem on flimsy material without it bunching and twisting!
ReplyDeleteThe tedious bit of trimming is well worth it :)

ReplyDeletebridesmaid dresses in Chiffon
Thank you! My daughter's handmade prom dress (mail order) arrived 3" too long. It also arrived 1 month later than expected so no time to send it back for alterations. I have no fears of hemming the underlining, but the chiffon is worrisome....but now its not!
ReplyDeleteGreat! Let me know how it turns out!
DeleteGreat Hemming Chiffon .
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post and amazing selection!
ReplyDeleteWould it be OK to have a 1 1/2 in hem in the fabric directly under the chiffon overlay of the wedding dress. I am doing an alteration for a friend who is short on funds and nervous about cutting it all off and then it be to short - no going back then....
ReplyDeleteWhat is the fabric under the chiffon?
DeleteI haven't use chiffon in years and am going to give it a go again in the near future. Was looking for new tips and with your excellent tutorial will definitely give this a try.
